I wasn't able to call in last week, but wish I could have, particularly in regard to the Phila. conversation and non-profits running libraries and branches within another organization. It's possible to do that kind of thing -- I work for the largest non-profit public library west of the Mississippi, Cedar Mill Community Library. We are a contractor within a county cooperative (NOT a city), and there are ways to make it work. (Our coop includes other non-profits and city libraries across Washington County.) I'm not sure how you deconstruct a city library system, particularly when buildings are concerned (who owns the building? is it rented? etc.) BUT, non-profits can run libraries within other structures; whether it's the best option, that's the question. Just my 2 cents (co-op site: www.wccls.org)
